Tracy Hayes

b. 1970

Tracy Hayes is a mixed media and installation artist. Restless mark-making explorations build across media. Imagery emerges as vaguely subterranean and from a process that is as reliant upon drawn media as upon painted. Hayes’ work has been exhibited at The Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard, Eastover Contemporary Art Space, Gadsden Museum, Mosesian Center for the Arts, Kathryn Schultz Gallery, Bromfield Gallery, Arts Mid-Hudson, A.P.E. Gallery and New Arts Center.

Hayes holds a BA from University of New Hampshire, a BFA from New Hampshire Institute of Art (’12) and an MFA in Visual Art at Lesley University College of Art + Design (’21). Hayes is co-founder of Art+Everywhere, co-director of Gallery RAG, and currently lives and works in Morrisville, VT.

“Mixed media works emerge in series as explorations of acrylic and oil on paper and canvas. Imagery is vaguely subterranean and emerges from a process that is as reliant upon drawn media as upon painted. Earthen references are reiterated within tonal palette. There are glimpses of what lies within, though entry is barred. Billowing shapes hold viewer aloft and safely at a distance as entry points emerge in one instance to break apart in another. Structures appear briefly only to dissipate and dissolve. The metaphorical space of above, below and behind the surface is considered to access what is sensed to be present, but not readily visible. These works seek to make sense of a world just outside of reach, beckoning yet elusive.”

Q. If you could offer your younger self any advice at the start of your artistic career, what would it be?”

A. “Embrace the more, don’t compromise your vision.”
