Marcus Greene

b. 1954

Marcus Greene is a lifelong artist with a career in teaching. Classical training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and contemporary critical theory and practice in the MFA program at Indiana University inform explorations in drawing, painting, print, sculpture, and mixed media. Breadth and depth of artistic engagement have been and continue to be the signature qualities of a teaching career spanning 35 years at art colleges and universities, with seven years experience chairing two different departments, (Foundations and Fine Arts), summer programs in Florence, scoring AP portfolios for the ETS, and much more.

“The prompt made me think a lot, and it coincided with upheaval in the greene household, including compulsory/involuntarily cleaning out the basement. Among many other things there are a hundred or so of the oldest artworks from my 70 years of life, 50 years of serious painting. A lot to choose from. The most “significant” or “resonant” for me personally, are a pretty idiosyncratic little group.”

Q. If you could offer your younger self any advice at the start of your artistic career, what would it be?”

A. “Be sure to marry Eileen (again). Commit to art; (sooner) it’s the only thing you can ; also to teaching – you’ll get better at it eventually.”
