Alex Leith

b. 1989

Alex grew up in Portsmouth New Hampshire where his father runs a Funeral Home. The artist attended the University of New Hampshire BFA program with a focus in Painting and Printmaking from fall 2008 to spring 2014 when he then moved to Philadelphia, PA to further his passion for the arts and culinary arts. In 2021 he relocated to Newmarket, NH where he has found particular inspiration in the surrounding landscape.

“Each of these works are ‘NFS’ for different reasons. It could be the self-portrait because I don’t want to part with the frame. Maybe it’s the portrait of a deceased loved one that I never could call finished. Perhaps it’s a personal recollection of an impactful celestial event or a ‘snapshot’ of one of the chaotic and convoluted sculptural works lurking in the corners of my studio. It could just be the fact that people don’t dust raw flour onto cooked bread… leading to the realization stock photos maybe aren’t always the best references.”

Q. If you could offer your younger self any advice at the start of your artistic career, what would it be?”

A. “become obsessed but don’t obsess. you’ve already started the piece in your head…figure out what it is and release it. never hesitate to experiment and enjoy yourself. work with any medium you get the opportunity to, generally just try new things and think new ways. have multiple works going, work with collage. know your worth. listen to people but never do it blindly. meditate.”
